Before Doctor Who hit the small screen in 2005 Big Finish was the first company to pave the way with new adventures first featuring Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy reprising the roles of their respective Doctors and later on Paul McGann coming on board in a much anticipated and long awaited series of new adventures featuring his Eighth Doctor.
Before this, fans could only get their Doctor Who fix through a series of original novels first featuring Sylvester McCoy’s Seventh Doctor and later branching out into a series of Missing Adventure novels which featured previous incarnations of the Doctor first published through Virgin and later with BBC Books which began publishing a series for McGann’s Eighth Doctor picking up where his only screen appearance in 1996 left off.
The Big Finish audios finally gave fans of the series a chance to finally hear their favorite Doctors again rather than reading their adventures. Many of the audio plays were written by people who had previously penned tales for both Virgin and BBC Books respective series’s.
But long before their Doctor Who series got the green light, Big Finish had produced a series of audio plays featuring Professor Bernice Summerfield. A character created by Paul Cornell for the Seventh Doctor’s New Adventure series. Long before Cornell wrote for the new series, he got his start in the world of Doctor Who with the New Adventures. Bernice Summerfield, or Benny as she is usually referred to, was brought to life by actress Lisa Bowerman. Who played the part of Cheetah warrior Kara in Sylvester McCoy’s last episode as the Doctor in the classic series Survival. Benny crossed over into the world of Doctor Who audio adventures in two stories. One of which written by her creator Paul Cornell.
