For the Eleventh Gift of December…

Last DragonMy name is Padraic Gribbons. I’m a student at Worcester State University majoring in Elementary Education and Developmental Psychology, and I am the resident children’s literature specialist. I’m responsible for keeping the children’s areas looking nice and for knowing as much as I possibly can about what kids love to read.

Padraic’s favorite book that he recommends for a gift…

Flight of the Last Dragon, by Robert Burleigh

and

The Alcemyst by Michael Scott

Why this book?

The illustrations in Flight of the Last Dragon are by the same Alchymistwoman who illustrated Harry Potter, and the whole story is just a very sweet, sing songy story about an old dragon going for one last adventure.  For readers a bit older, The Alchemyst by Michael Scott and its sequels are one of the best series I have ever read. I easily rank it up with Lloyd Alexander’s Chronicles of Prydain or the His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman.  Its all about two siblings, brother and sister, who discover that mythology and legend are true, and that they are right in the middle of it all. It features a strong female protagonist, and some of the coolest battle scenes I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
