Local Author Spotlight: Cheryl Cory

11252013 - MDSG CoverAnnie’s Book Stop of Worcester welcomes Cheryl Cory, author of Must’ve Done Something Good and We’ve Got Confidence!, as well as one of the co-founders of the Worcester Writer’s Collaborative.  Cheryl has also been a long time friend and supporter of ABSW, so we’re very pleased to shine a bright light on her and her work! Cheryl, along with several other authors from the WWC will be at ABSW all day Saturday, November 30, for Small Business Saturday. Stop in to hear some reading, get autographed books, and meet some really fabulous people–like Cheryl!

If you don’t know Cheryl, here’s a little about her in her own words.

I’m the author of two comic novels, and I live in Worcester. I write about things I know and love: family, sisterhood, love, all forms of shenanigans, and a deep and abiding love for both Pride and Prejudice and The Sound of Music that probably falls just this side of obsession.

For starters, what question do you wish interviewers would ask you, and what would the answer be?

Q: Cheryl, do you happen to have written a haiku about your novel Must’ve Done Something Good?

A: As a matter of fact, I have! Funny you should ask. Here it is:

Turbulent plane ride
Bluffed promise to God—He calls!
Now do something good

Writers very often have furry or feathered or otherwise non-human companions to “help” them through their work.  Do you? What do you have? How do they “help” (or, “not-help”) with your writing?

I do! Our cat Betsy is eighteen years old and going strong. Let’s just say what she lacks in brain power and hearing she more than makes up for in sweetness. As far as helping me with my writing goes, sometimes I’ll listen to her interesting attempts at communication and sharpen my word choice skills wondering whether what she’s doing would more accurately be described as unholy howling or unholy yowling.

Do you have any favorite foods or drinks that must be in the vicinity (or must be avoided) while you’re writing or editing a piece of work?

I love snacking, and I love writing about other people snacking. Why should I get all the fun? Some of my favorites that make it into my writing and onto my desk: Cheetos, peanut butter cups, and chips with onion dip. I could definitely eat all of these together in one sitting.

Are there any groups, clubs, or organizations that you would recommend to other writers that have helped you in 11252013 - CherylCoryyour career?

I would be severely remiss if I did not mention the Worcester Writers Collaborative here! And since no one likes to be even partially remiss, I’d love to give the WWC and co-founder Jessie Olson a nice shout-out (I’m the other co-founder). We started the group in 2011 as a sort of networking and marketing group for local writers. People in the group are so helpful, and it’s a great place for those just starting out to get advice from writers who’ve been there, whether the question is about writing, editing, querying, marketing or self-publishing. People in the group are generous about sharing what they know. Connecting with other writers has been one of the best parts of this whole writing adventure. On a side note, Annie’s has been hugely supportive of the group, which we really appreciate.

Anyone interested in finding out more about what’s going on in the local writing scene can visit our website (worcesterwriters.org).

We also run a community Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/worcesterwriterscollaborative) and a group specifically for local writers to connect with one another (https://www.facebook.com/groups/worcesterwriterscollaborative).

Where can people find your work? (Besides ABSW ;)–though they should totally check here first!)

My books are also available locally at the Assumption College Bookstore and Funky Stuff, both in Worcester.

How can we follow your work, share your awesomeness, or otherwise stalk you in a totally non-creepy way?

Best places for innocuous stalking:

Thank you very much for the interview, Cheryl!

Once again, if you want to meet Cheryl in person, along with many more local and awesome authors, make sure you stop by ABSW tomorrow for our Small Business Saturday celebration!
