irisOn this wintry Tuesday, we at ABSW, located at 65 James Street in Worcester, would like to shine a spotlight on two characters whose titles grace our shelves: Iris Wildthyme and Jemma7729.

These women of space and time could not be more different than one another, but their tales make for intriguing reading.

* Iris Wildthyme, created by British author Paul Magrs, is both a spin-off character in the DOCTOR WHO universe and an independent operator in her own right. Traveling through the spacetime continuum in a modified red London doubledecker bus, she is capricious, playful, and scatter-brained… at least, if one goes by appearances. Underneath the flightiness is a good heart; if one reads between the lines of her unreliable narrator style, one will see a brilliant mind. Her adventures are romps, but satisfying romps. Currently in stock at ABSW are the following titles from Obverse Books: LADY STARDUST; WILDTHYME IN PURPLE; IRIS: ABROAD; IRIS WILDTHYME AND THE CELESTIAL OMNIBUS; FIFTEEN; and MISS WILDTHYME AND FRIENDS INVESTIGATE.

jemma* JEMMA7729 and its sequel J2, written by local author Phoebe Wray, are much darker tales with a gritty texture and a spare style of storytelling. Set in a dystopian future America, these books feature strong heroines who battle for survival against steep odds like the fallout from the Gender Wars and the machinations of the current corrupt governmental regime. JEMMA7729 focuses on the main character from childhood to adulthood; J2 picks up the tale when Jemma meets her illegal younger clone.

Let Annie’s Book Stop of Worcester introduce you to speculative fiction outside the mainstream.
