Events Buzz: December is Here!

12072015 - Book light picWe had a lovely weekend with the Worcester Storytellers and Richard Fox, Wishing Well Connections and their “Everything but the Writing” kickoff party, Susan L. Pelletier and her book signing, and everyone who came out to our First Annual Dickens Marathon (co-sponsored by the Worcester County Poetry Association). Thank you to all of you who stopped in this weekend to our little “bigger on the inside” bookstore at 65 James Street.

Happy Hanukkah to all of our Jewish Friends! We wish all of you a wonderful Celebration of Light!

And if you need a little light in your reading life, we’ve just gotten in a selection of LED book lights (incidentally, in blue and silver). Also, for those not sure what to get their book-loving or beloved geek in their circles of friends and family, ABSW does also have gift certificates available. (It’s sometimes hard to tell which sonic screwdrivers or other tools one has or needs—and, like Potter-verse wands, sometimes sonic accessories are best left for personal selection.)

If you’re still looking to buy that something special, we are currently in the midst of our Holiday Blogging Marathon, where we’re posting photos, gift ideas, and more almost daily for December. In addition to book lights and Doctor Who accessories, we’ve got a lot of new items that we’re excited to share with you!

Also, we’ve got THREE MORE fabulous events happening this week!

THIS THURSDAY, December 10, ABSW welcomes Cecelia Tan for What’s Hot in Erotic Fiction? from 7:00 – 8:00 PM. Cecelia Tan founded Circlet Press, a 23-year old press focusing on erotic speculative fiction with quite a few BDSM elements. If you’ve been a long-time fan of erotic fiction or you only recently discovered it with books like Fifty Shades of Grey, this evening will help you find out more about the industry and where you can find even more flavors of erotica. If you’re interested in writing erotic fiction, Tan can also share information about publishing in this genre.

And then THIS SATURDAY, December 12 from 2:00-4:00 PM UMass Dartmouth professor John Silva gives a talk on the History of the American Tavern and how to recreate one in your own home. Studying taverns has been a long-time hobby of the science professor, and he has turned a wing of his house into a reconstructed tavern. Colonial attire welcomed and encouraged!

Finally, THIS SUNDAY, December 13 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM, author Michael J. Cooper returns to celebrate his first historical adventure based on Hebrew history, Foxes in the Vineyard, the Grand Prize winner for the 2011 Indie Publishing Contest.

Using research on history and Hebrew culture, Cooper’s Foxes in the Vineyard, while published before The Rabbi’s Knight, is a sequel to the events and mysteries in a tale of “Templars, Nazis, and the battle for Jerusalem.”

That brings us to next week, where we finish out the month with one more event in addition to our regular events…

Saturday, December 19, 7:30 PM onward – Holiday Caroling with Sam & Fran & Friends! Join members of the Free People’s Artists Workshop for an evening of yuletide spirit. This is a moving feast, and we’re their stop at 7:30. Bring your voice, your instrument, or just your love of music. And feel free to don fancy holiday garb, too!

Spinning Yarns Craft and Audiobook Social, every Monday 7:00 PM (except for when the Free People’s Artists Workshop meets the last Monday of the month). Bring a craft and enjoy an audiobook or audio drama with other crafty booklovers!

Worcester Storytellers, the fourth Friday of every month from 7-8:30 PM. For the complete updates and schedules, follow Worcester Storytellers on Facebook! UPDATE: We will not have Worcester Storytellers for December, but they will return on January 22.

The Free People’s Artists Workshop, the last Monday of each month from 7:00-9:00 PM. Networking and feedback from other artists and creators of all types. Co-sponsored by the Worcester County Poetry Association.

Doctor Who Talks, the third Thursday of every month from 7:00 – 8:00 PM. Join us for a discussion of our favorite science fiction serial. Every month will have a different topic! UPDATE: We will not have a Doctor Who Talk for December, but this event will return on January 18.

NEW REGULAR EVENT: The Rainbow Readers of Massachusetts is an LGBTQA Book club that will meet once a month on Saturdays. Regular meetings start back up in January, with dates and book announcements TBA.

As always, keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for the most up-to-date information.

May your world be filled with wonderful words!
