Events Buzz: Worcester Reads

03122018 - Worcester Reads Box

As of the writing of this blog/newsletter, we’re planning on being open at our 65 James Street location tomorrow, despite the storm, but PLEASE, keep an eye on our Facebook page in case we have to close due to the weather.

We’re also happy to be hosting a donation box for Worcester, The City That Reads again. We’ll have the box available by the register through May 15. Donate new or gently used books for PreK through 8th Grade, and they will be distributed to Worcester students for summer reading. To find out more, check out www.worcesterreads.org.

A great big thank you to everyone who came out this weekend for Rainbow Readers discuss Bingo Love! As always, we had a wonderful time. Rainbow Readers of Massachusetts is a LGBTQIA book club that meets once a month at our store. We also apologize to anyone inconvenienced as we postponed our  The Future of Newspapers; Dan Kennedy’s The Return of the Moguls presentation due to the weather. We will be having Dan on Thursday, June 7!

If you have enjoyed our events or the time you’ve spent in our little store, consider leaving us a review on TripAdvisor or leaving us a review on Yelp. You can also review us on Facebook!

We continue with another two great events THIS WEEK!

THIS THURSDAY, March 15, at 7:00 PM, join us for our Doctor Who Discussion Night: Cybermen.

ABSW has a sizable representation of Doctor Who merchandise, and owner Patty Cryan is a long-time fan of the series—the world’s longest running science fiction serial! This month, we are talking about Classic and Modern Who antagonists—The Cybermen! Don’t DELETE this month’s chance to talk about the many ways these aliens are presented throughout the Doctor’s lives.

And THIS SATURDAY, March 17, from 1:00 – 3:00 PM, we are hosting Worcester County Then and Now presented by Derek Strahan.

Blogger, instructor, writer, and photographer Derek Strahan pulls back the curtain of time and shows us the Worcester of 100 years ago through beautiful photographs and historical descriptions. He’ll have copies of his newest book, New England Then and Now, which includes Worcester county locations, to sign at the event.

Derek Strahan is the author of the blog “Lost New England,” as well as the book, Lost Springfield. He is a graduate of Westfield State University with degrees in English and Regional Planning, and he currently teaches English at The Master’s School in Simsbury, Connecticut. He lives in Springfield, Massachusetts with his wife Melissa and their son Isaiah. New England Then and Now is his most recent book.

In New England Then and Now, vintage photos from 100 years ago are paired with the same viewpoint photographed today. Despite the lapse of a century, these classic locations have been beautifully preserved and have been photographed at the onset of fall.

And later this month…

Sunday, March 25, 1:00 – 3:00 PM – Bharat Babies Children’s Book Creators.
