Speculative Fiction Tuesday: Titles From Old Friends And New Ones Not Yet Met!

This week’s F/SF releases are a varied group, ranging from seasoned talents to debut authors.

  1. First we have DESDEMONA AND THE DEEP by C.S.E. Cooney, a fantasy novella in which the spoiled daughter of a rich mining family must retrieve the tithe of men her father promised to the world below. On the surface, her world is rife with industrial pollution that ruins the health of poor factory workers while the idle rich indulge themselves in unheard-of luxury. Below are goblins, mysterious kingdoms, and an entirely different hierarchy. We had the privilege of interviewing the author in October 2015, just prior to the release of BONE SWANS.
  2. Next is THE GOSSAMER MAGE by Julie E. Czerneda, a master of worldbuilding. From the publisher page: “Only in Tananen do people worship a single deity: the Deathless Goddess. Only in this small, forbidden realm are there those haunted by words of no language known to woman or man. The words are Her Gift, and they summon magic… Mage scribes learn to write Her words as intentions: spells to make beasts or plants, designed to any purpose. If an intention is flawed, what the mage creates is a gossamer: a magical creature as wild and free as it is costly for the mage.”
  3. Then we have SHROUDED LOYALTIES by Reese Hogan, a military science fiction novel. Naval officer Mila Blackwood is determined to keep her country’s most powerful secret – shrouding, the ability to traverse their planet in seconds through an alternate realm – out of enemy hands. But spies are everywhere: her submarine has been infiltrated by a Dhavnak agent, and her teenage brother has been seduced by an enemy soldier. When Blackwood’s submarine is attacked by a monster, she and fellow sailor, Holland, are marked with special abilities, whose manifestations could end the war – but in whose favor? Forced to submit to military scientists in her paranoid and war-torn home, Blackwood soon learns that the only people she can trust might also be the enemy.
  4. Finally we come to LIES OF DESCENT by Troy Carrol Bucher, a swords-and-sorcery title from a debut author, first in the series FALLEN GODS’ WAR. The Fallen Gods’ War drove the remnants of a victorious army across the ocean in search of a new homeland. A thousand years later, the lifeless continent of Draegora is largely forgotten, a symbol for the regiments that remain. Demons to some. Protectors to others. The power of their god-touched blades has forged a nation, though many resent their absolute control… Riam and Nola are unknowing descendants of the old world. When it’s discovered they carry enough Draegoran blood to serve in the regiments, they are dragged away from their families to begin training. If they survive, they will be expected to enforce the laws of the covenant, to fight the Esharii tribesmen who raid along the border, and to be judge, jury, and executioners for those accused of crimes.

Thank you, as always, for making our shelves your destination.
